This triangular sliver of land was once completely underwater. Along the edge of Port Vell, where fishing boats still anchor and narrow streets lead straight to the Mediterranean, everything you see remained submerged until the 1600s when construction of the port created this new ground. Barceloneta exists because of war and displacement. After the 1714 siege, when the victorious forces demolished 1,016 homes in La Ribera to build the massive Ciutadella fortress, thousands of residents lost everything.

In 1753, military engineer Juan Martín Cermeño was commissioned to design an entirely new neighborhood on this reclaimed land. His solution was brilliantly practical: a strict grid of narrow streets running north to south, allowing cooling sea breezes to flow through. Every house was limited to just two stories, not for aesthetics but for military strategy. The fortress needed clear sightlines to fire cannons toward the city if rebellion sparked again.

By 1759, the neighborhood housed 1,570 people in 329 small homes. Fishermen were the first to settle, followed by metalworkers when factories arrived in the 19th century. What seems remarkable now is that until 1992, Barceloneta had no beach at all. Only industrial buildings and fishing shacks lined the waterfront until the Olympics transformed it into the sandy coastline visited by millions.
