You are walking through streets that have witnessed over 2000 years of history, where ancient Rome still breathes beneath Mediterranean cobblestones. Nestled between La Rambla and Via Laietana, the Barri Gòtic is the historic heart where this great city began. Around 15 BC, Roman legions established Barcino on Mont Tàber, a hill rising just 16 meters above sea level.

They constructed imposing walls 8 meters thick and 18 meters high, defended by 78 towers stretching 1270 meters around their settlement. Walk along Carrer Llibreteria or Carrer Ciutat and you are following the exact paths of Roman soldiers, the ancient cardo and decumanus that formed the backbone of their colony. On Carrer Paradís, hidden inside a medieval courtyard, stand four massive columns from the Temple of Augustus.

These 9 meter high pillars, nearly 2000 years old, mark the sacred summit where Romans worshipped their emperor. But here is the surprising truth: despite its medieval name, much of what surrounds you was recreated in the 1800s and early 1900s. The Cathedral's Gothic facade was completed in 1913, and that picturesque bridge on Carrer del Bisbe dates only to 1928. City planners rebuilt the quarter to capture a romantic vision of the Middle Ages, layering new stone over ancient foundations.
