The square you're standing in has two layers of graffiti separated by centuries, and both of them were acts of defiance in their own way.

The decorative patterns you can see on the surrounding buildings are called sgraffito, an Italian technique where artists scratch through wet plaster to reveal a contrasting layer underneath. Catalonia adopted this style in the early 1700s, and the House of the Resellers Guild nearby still shows some of the oldest surviving examples in the city, dating back to the 17th century. It's an elegant form of mark-making, the kind that takes skill and patience.

Then came 1937. With the Spanish Civil War tearing the country apart, an unknown militia member painted "Plaça del Milicià Desconegut" directly onto the church wall in tar. The square of the Unknown Militiaman. A raw, urgent dedication to everyone fighting fascism.

When Franco's forces took Barcelona in 1939, authorities covered the inscription with wooden boards. It stayed hidden for 65 years until restoration workers accidentally uncovered it in 2004. The city council restored the letters and added a metal plaque to explain what you're looking at.
