Welcome to the world's largest Art Nouveau hospital, where beauty was prescribed as medicine. Hospital de Sant Pau is a sprawling complex of 27 pavilions that revolutionized how we think about healing spaces. Spanning nine city blocks in the northern Eixample district, just a short walk from the Sagrada Familia, this architectural masterpiece tells a story that began in 1401. Six medieval hospitals merged to form the Hospital de la Santa Creu, which served the people for over 500 years from its original location in the old quarter.

By the late 1800s, the medieval building could no longer meet modern medical needs. Wealthy banker Pau Gil left his entire fortune of 3 million pesetas in his will to build a new hospital that would combine cutting edge medicine with beautiful architecture. Architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner began construction in 1902, creating something unprecedented. He designed separate pavilions for each medical specialty, connected by underground tunnels so patients could move between buildings without facing harsh weather.

He rotated the entire complex away from the street grid to capture maximum sunlight, believing natural light and gardens were essential for recovery. Every surface blooms with mosaics, sculptures, and glazed tiles. The hospital treated patients until 2009, then underwent a 100 million euro restoration. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1997.
