On this ground once stood the royal palace where one of medieval Europe's most powerful rulers held court for six decades. Jaume I the Conqueror transformed the Mediterranean world through military conquest, legal reform, and cultural patronage during his extraordinary 62 year reign from 1213 to 1276. Within the ancient stone walls of the Gothic Quarter, where narrow medieval streets still preserve the footsteps of history, this king shaped the destiny of an entire region. Jaume became ruler at just five years old when his father died in battle in 1213.

The Knights Templar raised the young orphan, molding him into both a fierce warrior and skilled diplomat. He earned his legendary title by conquering the Balearic Islands from Muslim rule. Mallorca fell in 1229 when he was only 21 years old, commanding 155 ships and 15,000 soldiers. Menorca followed in 1231, Ibiza in 1235, and the entire Kingdom of Valencia in 1238. These victories established the Crown of Aragon as a dominant Mediterranean power.

Beyond warfare, Jaume revolutionized maritime law by compiling the Llibre del Consulat de Mar, which governed trade across the western Mediterranean. He wrote the first autobiography by a Christian king, choosing Catalan over Latin, making him a pioneer of vernacular literature. In 1263, he presided over a groundbreaking religious debate at his palace between Jewish scholar Nahmanides and Christian friar Pablo Christiani, granting both unprecedented freedom of speech.
