You are at the foot of Montjuïc, where an ancient castle overlooks the harbor. Within these stone walls, one of Europe's darkest moments unfolded at dawn on October 15, 1940. Lluís Companys was a labor lawyer who rose to become President of Catalonia in 1934. He championed workers' rights and fought for regional self government during Spain's Second Republic. When civil war erupted in 1936, Companys stood with the Republican forces against Franco's military uprising, turning the region into a vital center of resistance.

After Franco's victory in 1939, Companys fled to France seeking safety. But when Nazi Germany invaded France in 1940, the Gestapo arrested him in August and delivered him to Franco's regime. He was brought to the castle behind you, subjected to a brief military trial, and condemned to death.

At 6:30 in the morning, guards led him barefoot to the execution site. He refused a blindfold. As the firing squad took aim, Companys shouted his final words: Per Catalunya. For Catalonia. He remains the only democratically elected head of state executed in 20th century Europe. His grave lies at Montjuïc Cemetery, steps from where his life ended.
