One artist turned his dream into white concrete and glass, creating a space where imagination could run wild. In 1975, Joan Miró opened his foundation not just as a museum but as a living laboratory for contemporary art. On the slopes of Montjuïc, surrounded by Mediterranean pines and overlooking the cityscape, the Fundació Joan Miró rises as a striking collaboration between artist and architect Josep Lluís Sert. The white volumes and open terraces were designed to flood the galleries with natural light.

Joan Miró was born in 1893 to a family of craftsmen. His father worked as a watchmaker and goldsmith. After studying business, Miró suffered a nervous breakdown and abandoned commerce entirely. He turned to art and became one of the 20th century's most influential painters. His vibrant canvases blend surrealism with abstraction, featuring playful shapes and bold colors that evoke childlike wonder. Miró envisioned something revolutionary. He wanted a foundation where young experimental artists could create freely alongside established masters.

The building houses over 14,000 works including paintings, sculptures, textiles and nearly 8,000 drawings. The collection includes Alexander Calder's Mercury Fountain, a liquid metal sculpture sealed behind glass because mercury is poisonous. The building won the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 1977 for its exceptional design that perfectly showcases Miró's artistic vision and legacy.
