Just steps from the Gothic Quarter, lies a 2000 year old city of the dead hidden beneath a quiet square. At the heart of Plaça Vila de Madrid, 85 ancient Roman tombs rest in their original positions, marking one of the best preserved burial sites from Barcino, the Roman settlement that became modern day Catalonia's capital. Between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, Roman law strictly forbade burials within city walls.

The dead were instead laid to rest along roads leading out of town, their graves serving as reminders to travelers of those who came before. This necropolis served ordinary people: slaves, freed slaves, and working class citizens whose families marked their resting places with cupae, simple barrel shaped stone monuments that line both sides of an ancient pathway. The burial ground connected Barcino to what is now the Sarrià district. Over time, river sediments buried the entire site, accidentally preserving it from stone robbers who typically dismantled Roman structures for building materials.

Construction workers stumbled upon the necropolis in 1956, revealing graves still arranged exactly as mourners had placed them centuries earlier. The site holds over 200 individuals across various tomb types: altars, stelae, and the distinctive cupae that characterize Roman funerary customs.
