On this ground stands a monastery built in just 13 months that became home to nuns for nearly 700 years. The Royal Monastery of Saint Mary of Pedralbes rises in the peaceful Sarrià district, where white limestone once shaped both the landscape and the monastery's name. Queen Elisenda de Montcada founded this sanctuary in 1326 for the Poor Clare nuns, an order devoted to a life of prayer and simplicity. Her husband, King James II of Aragon, supported the project and dedicated the church to the Virgin Mary.

The name Pedralbes comes from Latin Petras Albas, meaning white stones, named after the quarry at the foot of Sant Pere Màrtir hill. Construction moved at remarkable speed. Work began in March 1326, and by May 3, 1327, the first community of 14 nuns and 15 novices had settled in. This quick timeline created something rare: a Gothic building entirely unified in style, without the architectural mix found in cathedrals built over centuries.

The three story cloister ranks among the world's largest Gothic cloisters. Queen Elisenda's alabaster tomb sits between church and cloister, carved with two faces. From the church side, she appears crowned as queen. From the cloister, she wears a widow's Franciscan habit. The Chapel of Saint Michael holds vivid frescoes painted by Ferrer Bassa in 1346, showing the influence of Italian master Giotto. The Poor Clare community lived here without interruption until 1983.
