Park Babelsberg in Potsdam, a vast 124-hectare park, is a testament to 19th-century landscape artistry and royal ambition. Commissioned by the future Emperor Wilhelm I and his wife Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, it reflects the skill of landscape architects Peter Joseph Lenné and Hermann von Pückler-Muskau. Lenné began designing the park in 1833, but progress was slow due to limited funds.

Without an irrigation system, many plantings withered. In 1845, the Steam Engine House designed by Friedrich Ludwig Persius changed this, as pressurized water could now irrigate the grounds. Dissatisfied with the initial results, Augusta turned to Pückler-Muskau, who refined and extended Lenné’s design, giving the park greater harmony and sophistication. His contributions were so valued that a memorial stone honors him.

The park also houses several remarkable buildings. At its center stands Schloss Babelsberg, the neo-Gothic summer residence of Wilhelm and Augusta, constructed between 1835 and 1849 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Friedrich Ludwig Persius, and Johann Heinrich Strack. Persius also built the Kleine Schloss for Augusta. Another striking feature is the Flatowturm, erected on the site of an old windmill that stood until 1848. This tower, together with other architectural gems, still defines the park’s historical and aesthetic character.
