Let’s pause here at the edge of the Spree River, where Monbijou Palace once stood a royal jewel now mostly forgotten by many Berliners. Few know that this elegant palace was not just a summer residence but also home to one of Prussia’s most significant art collections in the 18th century. Built around 1706 for Queen Sophie Charlotte, the palace’s name Monbijou means “my jewel” in French, reflecting the affection the queen had for this intimate retreat.

Unlike the grand royal palaces built to impress the world, Monbijou was designed as a cozy, private escape, surrounded by lush gardens and water. An interesting detail is that the palace housed a vast porcelain collection, which was so precious it survived several wars. This collection later formed the core of Berlin’s famous Porcelain Museum. Also, Monbijou was one of the first royal residences to have a public theater on its grounds, where performances helped introduce new art and culture to Berlin’s citizens.

Unfortunately, the palace was heavily damaged during World War II air raids and was demolished in the 1950s by East German authorities, who prioritized new urban developments over restoring the ruins. Today, Monbijou Park replaces the palace grounds, yet if you look closely, you might spot some old sandstone blocks hidden among the greenery silent witnesses of the palace that once was.
