Right where you're standing, close to one of Berlin's most storied boulevards, a 4.8-meter bronze statue of Joseph Stalin once looked out over this square. It was unveiled in 1951, during the early years of the Cold War, when East Berlin was under Soviet control and the city had been split between the Allied powers after World War II.

The location was no accident. Unter den Linden has always been Berlin's great ceremonial spine, lined with the architecture of kings and emperors. By placing Stalin here, the Soviet authorities were sending a clear message: this power belongs in the same league as Prussia's greatest rulers. It was bold, deliberate, and a little brazen.

Stalin died in 1953, and within a few years the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev publicly condemned his legacy, calling out his cult of personality and crimes. That changed everything for monuments like this one across the Eastern Bloc.

In 1961, the statue disappeared. No announcement, no ceremony, no morning news report. Workers removed it under the cover of darkness, and by dawn it was simply gone. A giant bronze man, erased like a typo. Apparently even dictators can be edited out.
