This place carries a secret that transformed Portugal's relationship with Europe. In 1992, Portugal was about to hold its first European Union Presidency, but the country lacked a venue grand enough to host the event. The government commissioned architects Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Salgado to design a building in just eight months, an almost impossible deadline. The Centro Cultural de Belém opened on July 15, 1993, right here along the Tagus River waterfront in Belém.

Its location was chosen deliberately, sitting between the 16th century Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém, where Portuguese explorers once departed for unknown worlds. The architects designed it with clean modernist lines and Portuguese limestone, creating a dialogue between past and present. The building was meant to be temporary, serving only for the EU Presidency meetings. But after the summit ended, officials realized they had created something remarkable.

The complex included five auditoriums, exhibition galleries, and meeting spaces that could serve the entire nation. In 2007, the Berardo Collection Museum moved into the center, bringing one of Europe's finest modern art collections. The CCB now hosts over 2,000 cultural events each year, from classical concerts to contemporary exhibitions, proving that a building born from political necessity became Portugal's cultural heart.
