This church carries the memory of one of Europe's darkest massacres, a devastating earthquake, and flames that left its walls forever scarred. The Church of São Domingos opened in 1241 as a Dominican monastery church near Rossio square. For centuries, it served as one of the city's most important religious centers, hosting royal weddings and ceremonies. But in April 1506, it became the starting point of unimaginable violence. A crowd gathered here after someone claimed to see a miraculous light on a crucifix during a drought.

When a Jewish man expressed doubt, mob fury erupted. Over three days, between 2,000 and 4,000 Jewish residents were murdered throughout the city in what became known as the Lisbon Massacre. The 1755 earthquake brought the building down, though it was later rebuilt. Then on March 13, 1959, a fire broke out during morning preparations. The flames consumed the wooden roof, melted the candles, and turned the baroque interior into ash and rubble.

The heat was so intense that the stone itself cracked and blackened. Instead of covering the damage, the community chose to preserve it. The charred columns, exposed stonework, and melted remnants remain visible. The scarred interior now serves as a living memorial to centuries of tragedy and human endurance at the heart of Rossio.
