This square carries the memory of Europe's most revolutionary hospital, a place where modern medicine was born and thousands of lives were saved under one roof. In 1492, King João II made a bold decision. He ordered the construction of Hospital Real de Todos os Santos right here at Rossio Square, replacing dozens of scattered medieval clinics with a single, massive medical center.

Completed in 1504, the building stretched along the entire eastern side of the square, its stone arches visible from every corner. Inside, something unprecedented was happening. Doctors, surgeons, and pharmacists trained together, learning techniques they would carry across Portugal's expanding empire. The hospital treated anyone, regardless of wealth, and pioneered the idea of centralized healthcare that we know now. On November 1, 1755, everything changed.

The earthquake struck at 9:40 in the morning. The hospital collapsed instantly, trapping hundreds of patients inside. Fires spread through the ruins for days. By the time the flames died, nothing remained of the grand building. The site was cleared in 1775, and Praça da Figueira was built over its foundations.
