You are now in the heart of a square named after a knight who sacrificed everything at the gates of São Jorge Castle. On October 21, 1147, Martim Moniz became a legend when Moorish defenders tried to slam shut the massive fortress doors during the final assault. As Christian forces stormed the hilltop castle, Moniz saw the closing gates would stop the attack.

He threw himself into the doorway, using his body as a wedge. The heavy doors crushed him, but stayed open just long enough for King Afonso Henriques and his soldiers to pour through and seize the fortress. This brutal moment ended more than 400 years of Moorish control. The siege brought together Portuguese troops and northern European crusaders in what became the Second Crusade's only real victory.

The battle transformed Al Usbuna, a thriving Islamic port, into the foundation of a new Christian kingdom. Moniz was a knight in the king's service, though little is known about his life before that October morning. His death at the castle gates became the defining story of how this strategic hilltop changed hands and shaped the future of an entire nation.
