This very spot marks the birthplace of fado, the haunting music that became Portugal's soul. In the 1820s, these narrow alleys of Mouraria filled with the voices of sailors, workers, and migrants who gathered in small taverns to sing about love, loss, and fate. Maria Severa changed everything.

Born here in 1820, she lived on Rua do Capelão and became the first woman to make fado famous. She sang in the neighborhood's taverns and brothels, her powerful voice carrying stories that everyone understood. When she fell in love with the Count of Vimioso, an aristocrat, her music reached beyond these streets into high society. She died of tuberculosis in 1846 at just 26, but her short life transformed fado from street music into an art form.

The music that started in these cramped spaces now belongs to the world. UNESCO recognized fado as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. Walk down Escadinhas de São Cristóvão and you'll find the colorful Fado Vadio mural, a tribute to Severa and the music born in these very streets. Mouraria remains home to over 50 nationalities, its walls covered in street art celebrating this multicultural heritage.
