You've arrived at one of Europe's busiest river crossings, where over 30 million passengers travel across the Tagus each year on routes that began in 1899. The Terminal Fluvial do Cais do Sodré is the main hub for Transtejo and Soflusa ferry services, connecting this waterfront to Cacilhas, Seixal, and Montijo on the southern bank. When organized ferry services started in 1899, private operators transformed daily life by offering reliable schedules across the river. Before this, people relied on irregular boat services or long detours by land.

The terminal you see was built in 2000 as part of an intermodal complex designed by architect Nuno Teotónio Pereira. It sits directly beside the 1928 railway station, creating one integrated transport point where trains, metro, and ferries meet. This wasn't by chance. The location was strategically chosen to serve the thousands of commuters who cross the Tagus daily for work. In 1975, several ferry companies merged to form the current operators.

The vessels have evolved dramatically since the steam powered boats of 1899. Modern catamarans now make the crossing, and in 2023, the first fully electric ferries entered service on these historic routes. The destinations remain largely unchanged after more than 125 years, with Cacilhas being the most frequent connection, departing every 10 to 15 minutes during peak hours.
