Step into a street where a commander's battlefield vow transformed into stone and prayer, creating one of the most stunning viewpoints you'll find in Bairro Alto. In 1665, the Marquis of Marialva stood before the Battle of Montes Claros, Portugal locked in its fight for independence from Spain. He made a promise: if victorious, he would build a convent dedicated to Saint Peter of Alcântara.

Victory came, and he kept his word. By 1681, the Convento de São Pedro de Alcântara rose here, its Baroque walls becoming home to Franciscan monks. This street, Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, climbs to the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, a terraced garden laid out in the 18th century. From here, your eyes sweep across red tiled rooftops to Castelo de São Jorge on the opposite hill.

When the 1755 earthquake devastated the city, this viewpoint remarkably survived. In 1952, artist Fred Kradolfer created a tile panel here, mapping the monuments spread before you. The convent facing the garden weathered that same earthquake with only slight damage. Behind its modest facade lie gilded altars, intricate azulejo tiles, and painted ceilings. The lower terrace holds a 1904 monument to the neighborhood's newspaper sellers, marking when Bairro Alto served as Portugal's press center.
