Every June 13, thousands gather at the Igreja de Santo António in Alfama, where one of the world's most beloved saints was born in 1195. Saint Anthony, known globally as the patron saint of lost things and matchmaker, started his life in this exact spot before becoming a Franciscan friar and eventually one of Christianity's most venerated figures. The procession that departs from here has followed the same route for centuries. As it winds through Alfama's narrow streets toward the cathedral, something remarkable happens: statues of saints from every church along the way join the parade.

What begins as a single procession becomes a grand celebration connecting dozens of churches and their communities. But there's more to this story. On June 12, the day before the procession, the city hosts the Casamentos de Santo António at the cathedral. This tradition began in 1958 when 26 couples who couldn't afford their own weddings were married in a collective ceremony at the church.

The practice stopped during the 1974 Revolution but resumed in 1997. Each year, 16 couples are chosen from hundreds of applicants. The city provides everything: rings, flowers, wedding dresses, suits, hairdressing, and even the reception. The civil ceremonies take place at City Hall, followed by Catholic blessings at the cathedral, fulfilling Saint Anthony's reputation as the saint who brings hearts together.
