Take a look at this magnificent iron tower rising 45 meters into the sky at the end of Rua de Santa Justa. This is the Santa Justa Lift, a vertical elevator that connects the lower Baixa district with Carmo Square high above, solving one of the most challenging geographical problems ever faced here. Engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard designed this Belle Époque masterpiece, inspired by the ornate ironwork sweeping across Europe at the turn of the 20th century.

Construction began in 1900, and when it opened on July 10, 1902, the response was extraordinary. On that first day alone, 3,000 people bought tickets despite each wooden cabin holding just 24 passengers. The lift initially ran on steam power, with the engine sitting at the very top of the structure. In 1907, it was converted to electricity, making it more efficient and reliable.

The Neo Gothic iron framework features intricate lattice patterns and decorative arches that make it as much a work of art as a functional piece of infrastructure. What makes this structure truly remarkable is its survival. It remains the only vertical public elevator of its kind still operating, while other urban lifts were either replaced by funiculars or demolished entirely. After 100 years of service, it was declared a National Monument in 2002, recognizing its significance to the architectural heritage and transportation history.
