This garden once carried thousands of litres of water beneath your feet. The São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint sits directly above the Loreto Gallery, a 1746 underground channel that was part of the monumental Águas Livres Aqueduct, the engineering marvel that saved the city from water shortages. In 1864, landscape architects transformed the area above these buried waterways into a two level garden terrace.

What had been abandoned wasteland became one of the most beloved meeting spots in Bairro Alto. The location takes its name from Dom Pedro IV, who uniquely served as both King of Portugal and Brazil's first Emperor between 1822 and 1831. From here, the panoramic view sweeps across the Baixa neighbourhood toward the medieval Castelo de São Jorge on the opposite hill.

A decorative tile panel created in 1952 by Swiss artist Fred Kradolfer marks the visible landmarks, helping visitors identify churches, palaces, and distant viewpoints. The garden showcases neoclassical elements including marble busts of ancient mythological figures like Minerva and Ulysses. Just steps away, the Glória Funicular has transported passengers up this steep incline since 1885, connecting the lower Restauradores square with this elevated terrace that marks the entrance to Bairro Alto's historic streets.
