Look closely at this building towering over Largo do Intendente. This is more than architecture. It's a giant advertisement made entirely of hand-painted tiles. António da Costa Lamego built this ceramic factory between 1849 and 1865 on ground where potters had worked for generations. He made a bold choice: cover the entire façade with azulejos designed by Ferreira das Tabuletas, his artistic director. The colorful panels show Chinese figures, exotic leaves, pottery jars, and playful monkeys.

These images celebrated Portugal's maritime trade routes to Asia and showed customers exactly what the factory could create. This was visual marketing centuries before billboards existed. Every tile told passersby what happened inside these walls. When Lamego died, his widow took over the business. The factory became known as Viúva Lamego, meaning "Lamego's Widow" in Portuguese.

Under her leadership, it grew into one of the country's most respected tile producers, working with leading artists and architects through the 1800s and 1900s. The factory moved production to Sintra in 1992, but this original building at number 25 still stands. Its naïve style tiles, with their cheerful figures and bright colors, continue telling the story of Portuguese ceramic craftsmanship to everyone crossing the square.
