In the quiet district of Chislehurst, Southeast London, lies Camden Place, a stately home with a rich and varied history. This house, originally built in the early seventeenth century for the historian William Camden, became the sanctuary for French Emperor Napoleon III following his dramatic fall from power. Napoleon III’s fate was sealed after his defeat at the Battle of Sedan in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War. The proclamation of the Third French Republic ended his reign, and in March 1871, Napoleon III and his wife, Eugénie de Montijo, fled France.

Seeking refuge, they settled in Camden Place, a house that had seen significant changes over the centuries. Initially remodeled in the early eighteenth century and later modified by architect and artist George Dance, Camden Place had also been the residence of politician Charles Pratt, who became Baron Camden in 1765 and later Earl Camden in 1786. Napoleon III spent his final years in exile at Camden Place, passing away in 1873 at the age of 64.

His wife, Eugénie, continued to live in Chislehurst, outliving him by several decades until her death in 1920 during a visit to Madrid. The former emperor, Eugénie, and their only son, Napoleon Eugène Louis Bonaparte, were ultimately laid to rest at St Michael's Abbey in Farnborough. Camden Place stands as a testament to a significant chapter in European history, marking the end of Napoleon III’s turbulent reign and his final days in exile. This historic house, with its centuries-old architecture and connections to notable figures, remains a symbol of the dramatic shifts in power and fortune that shaped the 19th century.
