Right here is the boy who once stood hungry in workhouse queues, who would become the most recognized face on Earth without ever uttering a single word on screen. This bronze statue in the heart of the entertainment district celebrates Charlie Chaplin, the Little Tramp who changed cinema forever. Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889, in Walworth, just a short walk from here. His parents were music hall performers, but his childhood was anything but glamorous. His father died from alcoholism at 37.

His mother Hannah struggled with mental illness and was eventually locked away in an asylum. Before Charlie turned 9, he had already been sent to workhouses twice, institutions for the desperately poor. At just 5 years old, he was shoved onto a stage when his mother's voice cracked mid performance. That moment sparked everything. By 8, he was dancing professionally with the Eight Lancashire Lads troupe.

The hunger, the shame, the survival taught him to read human emotion like no one else could. At 19, he sailed to America with Fred Karno's comedy company. Within a year of arriving in 1912, he created the character that would define an era: the Little Tramp with his bowler hat, bamboo cane, and that unforgettable shuffle. He never needed words. His 75 year career revolutionized film, and in 1975, the Queen knighted the boy from the slums.
