In the northwest corner of London lies Gladstone Park, a 35-hectare expanse of greenery that carries with it echoes of a storied past. The park takes its name from William Ewart Gladstone, the four-time British prime minister, who frequently visited the area in the late 19th century. At the time, Dollis Hill House stood on the land, a grand mansion where Gladstone was a guest of John Hamilton-Gordon and his wife, Ishbel.

The house became a meeting place for politicians, including Gladstone, who enjoyed its peaceful surroundings. After Gladstone’s death in 1898, the government purchased the estate and transformed it into a public park, naming it in his honor. Designed by landscape architect Oliver Claude Robson, the park was a continuation of his work after designing Roundwood Park nearby. Unlike Roundwood, Gladstone Park’s land was easier to manage, and Robson decided to maintain the northern part in its natural state while adding sports fields to the south. Today, Gladstone Park offers a perfect blend of history and recreation.

Visitors can explore winding paths, enjoy open green spaces, or take in panoramic views of London from its higher points. It’s a popular spot for sports, picnics, and quiet walks, providing a green retreat in the bustling city. The park’s deep historical ties and its serene beauty make it a special part of London’s landscape. Easily accessible via the Dollis Hill Underground station, it continues to be a cherished destination for both locals and visitors.
