Right here stands a red granite obelisk that honors a man who solved one of history's greatest mysteries and died under suspicious circumstances just before proving his critics wrong. John Hanning Speke was a British army officer turned explorer who became the first European to discover Lake Victoria in East Africa in 1858. But his real achievement was far more significant: he correctly identified this massive lake as the source of the Nile River, answering a question that had baffled explorers and scholars for over two thousand years.

Born in 1827, Speke served in India before joining fellow explorer Richard Burton on brutal expeditions through East Africa. They endured tropical diseases, hostile encounters, and grueling conditions. When Speke reached Lake Victoria, Burton was too ill to accompany him, a fact that would later fuel bitter disputes. On 28 July 1862, Speke stood at Ripon Falls and watched the Nile pour out of Lake Victoria. He had found what generations of explorers had died seeking. Burton refused to believe him, publicly challenging his discovery and demanding proof.

On 15 September 1864, one day before a scheduled debate with Burton at Bath, Speke was shot by his own gun while hunting. He was 37. The memorial you see here in Kensington Gardens, erected in 1866, was paid for by public donation. Years later, other explorers proved Speke had been right all along.
