This elegant Georgian manor in Walpole Park, Ealing, was built by the same architect who designed the Bank of England and created Britain's first purpose built public art gallery. Sir John Soane purchased this estate in 1800 for £4,500, determined to transform it into something extraordinary. He demolished most of the existing house but kept one wing designed by his former teacher, George Dance, as a mark of respect. Between 1800 and 1804, Soane rebuilt Pitzhanger as his architectural laboratory, experimenting with curved ceilings, cleverly placed mirrors, and innovative skylights that flooded rooms with natural light.

This was meant to be more than a country home. Soane envisioned a dynasty of architects, starting with his two sons, John and George. He entertained influential guests here, showcasing his talents and his growing collection of paintings and classical antiquities. The house was his calling card, proof of what he could achieve for wealthy clients. But family conflict destroyed his dream.

Disappointed by both sons, Soane sold Pitzhanger in 1810, just six years after finishing it. His collection moved to his house at Lincoln's Inn Fields, now the Sir John Soane's Museum. The manor later became home to the daughters of assassinated Prime Minister Spencer Perceval, then served as Ealing's public library for over 80 years before a major restoration in 2019 returned it to Soane's original vision.
