Here at 100 Oxford Street, beneath this unassuming office building, lies a cramped basement that sparked a musical revolution. The 100 Club, hidden down a simple staircase, became ground zero for the Punk Generation in September 1976. Punk was more than just music. It was raw rebellion by disaffected youth tired of polished rock stars and economic despair gripping 1970s Britain. These teenagers rejected fancy guitar solos and expensive equipment, embracing a do it yourself philosophy: anyone could grab an instrument and scream their frustration into a microphone.

On September 20 and 21, 1976, this dimly lit basement hosted the first international punk festival. The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, Buzzcocks, and a brand new group called Siouxsie and the Banshees performed before just 600 people crammed into the sweltering space. That weekend changed everything. The festival catapulted punk from underground obscurity into headlines across Britain. What began here spread worldwide, influencing fashion, politics, and attitudes for generations.

The venue originally opened as a jazz club in 1942, but those two September nights in 1976 gave it a new identity. The basement remains virtually unchanged, still hosting live music in the same dark, sweaty space where young rebels proved that revolution needs raw energy, not permission.
