Here lies one of Britain's darkest winter memories, hidden beneath the calm waters of this ornamental lake. On January 15, 1867, the ice suddenly shattered beneath hundreds of skaters, plunging 200 people into freezing water 12 feet deep. Forty souls perished that afternoon in what remains the worst ice skating disaster in British history. This tragedy unfolded at Regent's Park, a 410 acre green space that stretches between Marylebone in the south and Camden in the north.

The park itself tells a story of transformation. In the 1530s, King Henry VIII seized these lands from monasteries and turned them into his private hunting ground called Marylebone Park. Thick forests and roaming deer made it perfect for royal sport. Everything changed in the 1810s when the Prince Regent hired architect John Nash to create an exclusive pleasure garden. Nash envisioned 56 elegant villas surrounding a grand summer palace for the Prince. The plans were ambitious but reality fell short. Only 8 villas were ever built and the palace never materialized. The 1867 disaster came without warning.

Despite 21 people falling through cracking ice the previous day, hundreds of skaters returned. At 3:30 pm, the ice gave way. Heavy Victorian clothing and metal skates dragged victims down while desperate onlookers broke tree branches to throw as lifelines. Recovery took a week as workers cut through refrozen ice to retrieve bodies. The lake was later drained and its depth reduced to just 4 feet to prevent future deaths.
