Right here is where the Liberty Bell was born, cast in a foundry that shaped the sound of freedom across two continents. The Whitechapel Bell Foundry stood on Whitechapel Road from 1570 until 2017, making it Britain's oldest manufacturing company. Within these walls, skilled craftsmen poured molten bronze into moulds, creating bells that would ring from Philadelphia to Westminster. In 1752, the foundry cast the Liberty Bell for Pennsylvania's State House.

When it arrived in America after a stormy Atlantic crossing, the bell cracked during its first test ring. A century later in 1858, the same foundry created Big Ben, the 13 and a half ton bell that still chimes from Parliament's clock tower. Both bells cracked, but their flawed voices became icons of democracy and independence. This area takes its name from St Mary Matfelon, a white chapel that stood along the ancient Roman road connecting Aldgate to Colchester. Because Whitechapel lay outside the city walls and beyond the control of guilds, it became home to industries too dirty for central areas.

Tanneries, breweries and foundries filled the streets with smoke and noise. Waves of immigrants made Whitechapel their first home. French Huguenots brought silk weaving skills in the 1600s. Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe arrived in the 1800s, building synagogues and workshops. Irish families fleeing famine settled here, followed by the Bangladeshi community in the 1900s. Each group rebuilt the neighborhood while keeping their traditions alive.
