The building is already impressive from the outside, and the entrance gates with their golden details are truly something special. But you really must go inside.

What you're standing in front of began as a grain storage facility back in 1763. Paris wanted to secure its food supply, so this circular structure was built to hold massive reserves of grain. Look up when you enter and you'll notice something unexpected: a double spiral staircase. Workers used it to carry heavy sacks up one side and come back down the other, never crossing paths. It's a small detail, but it tells you everything about how seriously this place was designed.

Over the centuries, the building shifted from grain to commerce. By the late 1800s it had become a full trading floor, and the stunning ceiling mural you'll see inside dates from 1886 to 1889. Measuring 140 metres around and 10 metres tall, it wraps the entire rotunda with images of global trade across five continents.

Today, billionaire collector François Pinault turned this space into a contemporary art museum. The iconic dome, protected as a listed monument since 1989, was carefully preserved. History and modern art, living in the same space. It works beautifully.
