You're standing on Pont Neuf, which literally means "New Bridge." A strange name, considering this is actually the oldest bridge in Paris. Construction started under Henry II and finished under Henry IV, taking so long that locals nicknamed it "the Bridge of the Three Henrys."

Do you see the 381 stone faces carved along the sides? Every single one is different. They represent mythological creatures, placed here to ward off evil spirits. Nobody fully agrees on who all of them are, which makes them even better.

For centuries, this bridge was the beating heart of the city. Acrobats, tooth-pullers, street vendors selling early versions of French fries, and pickpockets all crowded this same stretch of stone. The bridge even had its own gallows. Lively and lethal at the same time.

Oh and do you see the equestrian statue of Henry IV at the center? The original was melted down during the Revolution. When a sculptor replaced it in 1818, he quietly stuffed anti-royalist pamphlets inside the horse's belly. When the city opened the statue in 2004, workers found seven boxes of documents and medals hidden inside.

Some bridges carry history. This one buries it.
