The Musée Marmottan Monet in the 16th arrondissement began in 1934 as a Napoleonic museum in a former hunting lodge. Everything changed in 1966, when Michel Monet, Claude’s son, donated over a hundred of his father’s works.

This gave the museum the largest Monet collection in the world, including the iconic Impression, Sunrise, the painting that gave Impressionism its name. The collection further grew with donations from other Impressionists such as Berthe Morisot, Degas, and Renoir, as well as a unique trove of medieval manuscripts.

But the museum is also known for a daring heist in 1985: nine paintings, including Impression, Sunrise, were stolen in broad daylight and only recovered five years later on Corsica. What was once an elegant hunting lodge is now an unexpected treasure trove of Impressionism and a place full of stories.
