Walking along Rue du Château d’Eau in the 10th arrondissement, you’ll see history reflected in the street’s name and public amenities. In 1811, Napoleon inaugurated the Château d’Eau fountain at what later became Place de la République. At the time, clean drinking water was scarce in Paris, so this public fountain was significant.

The street was then called Rue Neuve‑Saint‑Nicolas. In 1841, the open sewer along the street was covered, enabling urban development. Ten years later, in 1851, the street was renamed Rue du Château d’Eau in commemoration of this infrastructure advancement. In 1867, the original fountain was relocated to La Villette—about four kilometers away, a twenty-minute walk.

Today, along Rue du Château d’Eau you’ll find historic sites such as the Bourse du Travail, boutiques like Maison Lévy and La Trésorerie, restaurants like Holybelly and Les Résistants, and a market established in 1880 offering fresh produce. Walking the street easily connects you to cultural and culinary highlights.
