That ornate building in front of you? It cost more than the city's entire annual budget. The Obecní dům, built between 1905 and 1912, wasn't just a concert hall. It was a middle finger to Vienna, wrapped in gold leaf and stained glass. Czech architects Antonín Balšánek and Osvald Polívka designed every inch to scream Czech identity. The mosaics, the sculptures, the paintings inside, all made by Czech artists. Alfons Mucha alone covered over 700 square meters with his work. That's the size of 3 tennis courts. Here's the thing: this spot once held the Royal Court, where Bohemian kings lived in the 1380s. The Czechs demolished it to build this. New palace, new era, same power statement. The Austrians got the message. When World War I ended, Czech politicians gathered here on October 28, 1918. They declared independence right inside these walls. Czechoslovakia was born in what was essentially a very expensive music venue. Walk around to the main entrance. See that mosaic above? It shows the resurrection of the Czech nation. Subtle, right? The café inside still has the original Art Nouveau furniture. You can sit where revolutionaries once plotted the end of an empire.
