History unfolded right here on February 3, 1997, when Bohumil Hrabal, one of Czech literature's greatest writers, fell from a fifth floor window at Na Bulovce Hospital. He was 82 years old. The author who gave the world masterpieces like Closely Watched Trains and I Served the King of England died in this medical facility located in the Libeň district. Hrabal had been feeding pigeons from his hospital window, a simple gesture that reflected his lifelong compassion for ordinary moments and humble creatures. He was recovering from what appeared to be a routine illness when the fatal accident occurred. The fall happened during this quiet act of kindness, a scene almost fitting for a writer who spent decades documenting the beauty in everyday life. The circumstances remain subject to different interpretations. Some believe it was purely accidental, while others suggest he may have struggled with his health situation. What cannot be disputed is the immense cultural loss felt across the literary world. This hospital building, constructed in the early 20th century, became the unexpected final location in Hrabal's deeply rooted connection to the city. For decades, he was a fixture at U Zlatého Tygra, the Golden Tiger pub in Old Town, where he would spend hours observing people, listening to their stories, and transforming ordinary conversations into literary gold.
