The Dominican Monastery of Prague

The beautiful library standing here today was built on the ashes of one that was destroyed in a single afternoon.

For 200 years, Dominican monks made this place one of the most important centers of learning in Bohemia. They copied manuscripts by hand, taught theology, and kept their library tightly connected to Charles University. Every book was a months-long labor. Every page carried the careful marks of a monk who spent his entire working life bent over a writing desk.

Then came March 1420. The Hussite Wars had been burning through the region since Jan Hus, a reformer beloved by many Czechs, was executed at the stake in 1415. His followers turned their grief and fury against institutions they saw as corrupt, and monasteries were high on that list. A Hussite mob stormed this building, threw the books into the fire, smashed the furniture, and scattered the monks. What two centuries had slowly built was gone by nightfall.

The monastery sat in ruins for over a hundred years. Monks who escaped sometimes sold their rescued manuscripts just to survive in exile, trading a scholar's lifetime of work for a few weeks of food.

What makes the timing almost unbearably ironic is that the printing press arrived in the 1440s, right in the middle of all this. While handwritten Latin texts burned here in Prague, the first printed books were quietly multiplying across Europe. Destruction and revolution, apparently, have very poor timing.
