You're standing near the Church of Our Lady before Týn, right here in Old Town Square. Inside that Gothic church lies Tycho Brahe — a Danish astronomer whose work helped launch the Scientific Revolution. Brahe was born in 1546 into Danish nobility, but he chose the stars over politics. Working without a telescope — because it hadn't been invented yet — he built the most precise astronomical instruments of his age and catalogued the night sky with breathtaking accuracy. His observations eventually gave Johannes Kepler the data he needed to describe how planets actually move. But his death? That's where things get strange. In October 1601, Brahe attended a royal banquet in Prague. According to his assistant Kepler, he refused to leave the table to relieve himself — it would have been a breach of etiquette. Days later, unable to urinate, he died in agony at age 54. He reportedly wrote his own epitaph: *"He lived like a sage and died like a fool."* Theories of murder by mercury poisoning circulated for centuries, but scientists who exhumed his body in 2010 found no lethal traces. The most likely cause? A burst bladder — or perhaps fatal politeness.
