Right here in Prague's Old Town, beneath streets you've just been walking, lies one of history's greatest stories of ambition, deception, and obsession. Emperor Rudolf II was a man consumed by a dream — eternal youth, unlimited gold, and the legendary Philosopher's Stone. To chase that dream, he hired some of Europe's most brilliant minds, including the charismatic Englishman Edward Kelley. Kelley boldly claimed he could transmute ordinary metals into gold, and Rudolf believed every word. Kelley worked in elaborate laboratories across the city — some visible, others hidden deep underground. One secret laboratory, buried beneath Kozí Street, wasn't even discovered until 2002. Tunnels connected it directly to Prague Castle, suggesting these alchemists worked quietly in the emperor's service. But Kelley's promises fell apart. When gold never appeared, Rudolf's patience ran out. Kelley was arrested and locked up — first in Křivoklát Castle, then Hněvín Castle. He tried to escape, broke his leg in the attempt, and eventually died after drinking poison. Was Kelley a genius, a fraud, or simply a man who believed his own lies? Standing here in Old Town, you're just steps away from where that dangerous question played out.
