The Lennon Wall

For years, the Communist secret police tried to erase this wall every single night, and every single morning they failed.

The explosion of color covering this wall began with a single face. In 1980, someone painted John Lennon's portrait here, just beside the French Embassy, on what had been an entirely unremarkable stretch of plaster. That one act of defiance cracked something open.

Under Communist rule, Western music was banned. Beatles records were smuggled across borders like contraband, and getting caught listening to them could mean arrest. When Lennon was shot dead on December 8, 1980, Czech youth had no official space to grieve. So they came here instead. They painted lyrics, messages about peace and freedom, and portraits that felt like prayers.

The secret police showed up every morning and whitewashed the wall. By nightfall, it was covered again. This went on for years. The government branded the young people who painted here as mentally deranged alcoholics and agents of Western capitalism. In 1988, hundreds of students clashed with riot police on nearby Charles Bridge over the right to keep painting this wall. The police never actually won that argument.

The wall still belongs to the Knights of Malta, whose monastery sits quietly behind it. After Communism fell in 1989, the original portrait disappeared under layers of new paint. People kept coming anyway. Apparently defeating a totalitarian regime wasn't quite enough to stop anyone from adding one more coat.
