In the early 1960s, something remarkable began in The Hague. A new generation of musicians set out to find their own sound—something that broke away from tradition and echoed global trends. The city, known for its formal image, suddenly became the beating heart of a musical revolution. What Liverpool was for England, The Hague became for the Netherlands.

The breakthrough came in 1965, when the Golden Earrings released their debut single “Please Go,” which stayed on the charts for 27 weeks. This success marked the beginning of The Hague’s vibrant pop scene. New bands popped up all over the city, bringing fresh energy and inspiration.

The music was varied. The Motions delivered melancholic pop, Q65 embraced raw blues. Sandy Coast and Group 1850 added melody and experimentation. Together, they created a wave of sound that reached far beyond the Netherlands.

The peak came in 1969, when Shocking Blue topped the U.S. charts with “Venus.” A band from The Hague conquering the global music scene—it was a defining moment that confirmed the city’s place in pop history.

Though the heyday of the beat scene is long past, its legacy lives on. The annual Beatstad Festival on the Malieveld pays tribute to this golden era. Modern artists like Anouk and Di-rect prove the city’s musical spark still burns. And Golden Earring, now legendary, proudly carries that legacy forward.
