Standing here at the Binnenhof, you are at the very center of Dutch political life. This medieval complex has housed the seat of government for centuries, and the stones beneath your feet have absorbed more history than most places on earth dare to claim.

Dutch democracy did not simply arrive one day. It was built in layers, slowly and often reluctantly. For much of its early history, the Dutch Republic was run by a tight circle of wealthy merchants, with ordinary people having little say. That changed in 1848, when liberal statesman Johan Rudolph Thorbecke pushed through a constitutional reform that clipped the wings of royal power and handed real authority to parliament. It was a turning point that set the course for everything that followed.

From there, the right to vote gradually widened. Men gained universal suffrage in 1917, and women followed in 1919. Since then, every citizen aged 18 and older has had a voice in how this country is governed.

What makes the Netherlands unusual is not just the laws it passed, but the stubborn belief behind them: that power and personal freedom must always be kept in careful balance. Given that this principle was argued over, and agreed upon, right here in this courtyard, perhaps that feels entirely fitting.
