Standing here on the Lange Voorhout, you are in the company of one of The Hague's most beloved literary sons. Louis Couperus was born in 1863, the youngest of eleven children in a prosperous Hague family. His father was a lawyer and councilor, and the household buzzed with intellectual life. From an early age, Louis had an ear for language and a hunger for stories.

That hunger shaped a remarkable career. His debut novel, Eline Vere, follows a young woman torn between what society expects of her and what she actually feels inside. Later works like The Hidden Force and Old People and the Things That Pass pull readers deeper into themes of family secrets, cultural tension, and the quiet weight of fate. Much of that psychological depth traces back to something painful in his own life: the institutionalization of his eldest brother, a wound that never quite healed.

His presence still lingers across this city. On Surinamestraat, where he actually lived and wrote Eline Vere, a statue by sculptor Lambertus Sondaar was erected in 1963. The Louis Couperus Museum in the Archipel neighborhood keeps his memory alive with dedicated exhibitions.

Eleven children in the family, and somehow the youngest ended up with his face on a statue. Not a bad outcome for the quiet one.
