Johan van Oldenbarnevelt grew up in the quiet town of Amersfoort, where an early hunger for knowledge set him apart. Law studies in Leiden sharpened that hunger into something formidable, and he rose through the ranks of Dutch politics with remarkable speed. As Grand Pensionary of Holland, he became the architect of the Republic's diplomacy and one of its most essential voices for religious moderation.

For years, he worked alongside Prince Maurice of Orange. They shared a common enemy and a common goal: a strong, independent Republic. But shared enemies don't guarantee shared values. Van Oldenbarnevelt believed in tolerance and the sovereignty of individual provinces. Maurice grew increasingly orthodox and centralist. The religious quarrel between Remonstrants and Counter-Remonstrants pulled them into opposite camps, and what had been a partnership curdled into something far darker.

In 1618, Maurice moved against him. The charges were treason. The trial was a formality. On May 13, 1619, Van Oldenbarnevelt was executed right in front of the Binnenhof, just a short walk from where you're standing now.

He gave the Republic decades of his life. The Republic gave him seventy-one years and a sword. At least they eventually gave him this statue.
