Pieter Jelles Troelstra (1860–1930) was a pioneering Dutch socialist, lawyer, and poet who played a key role in shaping the country’s labor movement. Born in Friesland, he was deeply moved by the social inequalities of his time and dedicated himself to workers' rights. As founder and leader of the Social Democratic Workers’ Party (SDAP), he became known for his powerful speeches and writings that promoted socialist ideals.

In 1918, inspired by the Russian Revolution, Troelstra called on the Dutch people to join a socialist uprising — an event now known as “Troelstra’s Mistake.” The attempt failed, leaving him deeply disappointed. While many saw this as proof that the Netherlands was not ready for revolution, a 2005 episode of Andere Tijden suggested it was Troelstra’s own hesitation that caused the movement to falter.

Troelstra is also remembered as a gifted Frisian poet who contributed to the cultural identity of his home province. Though his revolutionary dreams went unrealized, his broader vision for social justice left a lasting legacy.

In The Hague’s Westbroekpark stands a striking monument created in 1953 by sculptor Piet Esser. It shows Troelstra mid-stride, arm raised as if addressing a crowd. Behind him, an abstract concrete arch with three bronze figures on top represents the collective spirit of the workers’ movement.
