The name on the street sign above you reads Hardebollenstraat, and if you speak any Dutch, you might already be smirking. "Hard balls street" is roughly how it translates, which made this particular address a goldmine for comedians, especially during the decades when the street was lined with prostitution windows. Those closed in 2013, when the city of Utrecht shut them down as part of a broader effort to combat human trafficking. The jokes, naturally, outlived the windows.

But the name itself is far older and considerably more respectable than all that. The Hardebol family were prominent figures in Utrecht's city government as far back as the 13th century. Influential, well-connected, the kind of family that gets streets named after them. This narrow passage between Voorstraat and Breedstraat was their turf, and the name stuck.

There is also a second theory that pulls in an entirely different direction. Around 1200, a city scales building stood nearby, used for weighing traded goods. That building was recorded under the name Herdebollencule. Some historians believe the Hardebol family later acquired it, which means the name might carry echoes of medieval commerce as much as family pride.

Eight centuries of trade, politics, and unfortunate wordplay, all packed into one short street.
