The Maliebaan, a famous street in the heart of Utrecht, is known for its historical significance and beautiful surroundings. This approximately 2-kilometre-long street, surrounded by trees and historic buildings, runs from the Stadschouwburg theatre to the Kleine Singel canal.

The name “Maliebaan” is derived from “malie”, an old Dutch ball game that was played at this location in the 17th century. This game, similar to croquet, became popular among students after the opening of Utrecht University during the Golden Age. The Maliebaan, built for this entertainment, quickly became a central point in the city. The game was played with a wooden ball and a bat, with players having to hit the ball through various gates. The Maliehuis served as the clubhouse for this game.

Today, the Maliebaan is known for its elegant mansions, museums, galleries and restaurants. But the street also has a dark side from its past. During the Second World War, the building at number 35 served as the headquarters of the SS and Gestapo in the Netherlands. This made the Maliebaan one of the most notorious locations in the country. After the war, this building was converted into office space and later into luxury apartments.
