Behind these thick circular walls, hundreds of people were chained inside tiny cells — and that was considered progress.

Europe's oldest psychiatric hospital stands as a perfectly circular fortress where 139 souls once lived behind barred doors, marking a revolutionary shift in how society treated mental illness in 1784.

Within the former General Hospital grounds, now a bustling university campus, this five story tower was built by architect Isidore Canevale under Emperor Joseph II. Before this building existed, mentally ill people were hidden in underground dungeons and cellars, treated as outcasts rather than patients needing care.

The Narrenturm became the first institution in continental Europe designed exclusively for housing and treating psychiatric patients. Its unique round structure contained 28 rooms per floor, each with individual cells featuring centrally heated spaces, an extraordinary comfort for that era. Strong doors and chains secured the inmates, reflecting the limited understanding of mental health treatment at the time.

By 1866, changing medical practices made the fortress design obsolete, and the asylum closed. Emperor Francis II had already established a pathological museum nearby in 1796. Since 1971, the tower has housed the world's largest public collection of anatomical pathology, preserving over 50,000 medical specimens that document two centuries of disease and human anatomy research.
