Museumplein is a well-known venue in the Netherlands for demonstrations and protests. The square attracts not only art lovers but also people who want to express their views. Demonstrators here have the space to get their message across to a wide audience.

In 1981, one of the biggest protests in the Netherlands took place on the Museumplein. During the Cold War, the United States wanted to place nuclear missiles in the Netherlands as a defence against possible threats from the Soviet Union. Almost 400,000 people took part in this protest, which is an impressive number. The demonstrators wanted to make it clear that they were against the placement of nuclear missiles. As a result of this action, it was officially decided not to station nuclear missiles in the Netherlands. This demonstration is characterised as the most crowded moment ever measured in Amsterdam.

Later, in a new twist to the story, Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, revealed that nuclear missiles were stored at Volkel Air Base after all, despite the earlier official statement. This highlighted the impact and complexity of such geopolitical issues.

Museum Square remains not only a historic site for demonstrations, but also a place where social and political issues are given a stage. It reflects freedom of expression and citizens' engagement with social issues.
